One of the most requested initiatives from the student body before starting the Spring 2023 semester was a redesign of the letterman jacket. During our transition, I reached out to members from the student body to recruit a Letterman Jacket Redesign Committee, working with the Office of University Life to work on a schedule in which the new design should be finalized by.
Our goal was simple: how can we create a design that better reflects Mason as a university? Inspired by other universities within the Incheon Global Campus, our first idea was to use the university seal. I worked with the Office of University Branding and Creative Services in the Fairfax campus to discuss the possibility of such addition - as the seal is “restricted to high-level, university-wide activities and events,” our best alternative was to use the Mason GM and/or Athletics marks seen below:
As such, our two new additions to the new redesigned letterman jacket are the Primary Athletics Mark (Mason Patriots) in a gold color scheme and the Athletics GM Mark. The main color scheme for the letterman jacket was one that we thought hard within the committee, either green and gold, or black with gold accents.
We first internally decided on a mainly black color scheme, however we received many suggestions from the student body to better reflect Mason’s color scheme. That’s why we held a public referendum on the design for the jacket to vote for one of the two proposed designs, and by a vote of 67% (57-27), we landed on our final design that is a letterman jacket sporting Mason’s green and gold color identity. As a student-led initiative, we sure can’t wait to see our Patriots wearing our new letterman jacket!
