I am happy to share a recent personal feature on Incheon Ilbo where I was invited to share my own experiences at Mason Korea, the Incheon Global Campus, Arirang TV, and Incheon Metropolitan City. This story, as part of the “People of Incheon” (인천사람들) section of Incheon Ilbo, was published both in print and online.
Thank you very much for the feature, and to Mason Korea’s Office of PR and Communications for their support and English translation provided in the article below.
"IGC (Incheon Global Campus) changed me into a proactive person."
Hyunwoo Jo (22), a junior at George Mason University Korea (Mason Korea) located in Songdo International City in Incheon's Yeonsu district, shared his experiences.
Jo chose Mason Korea over studying abroad for practical reasons. "I chose IGC because I could earn the same degree at half the cost compared to studying abroad," he explained. "Also, since many global companies and NGOs are located in Songdo, it is easy to advance into the international stage."
Initially an introverted student, Jo became a more outgoing person through the free and communicative atmosphere of the university. Last year, he even served as the student government president.
"I was happy to be able to communicate with students from various cultures and represent them," said Jo. "As the student government president, I was the first IGC student to attend an inter-university meeting hosted by Incheon City, and I was able to speak with the mayor of Incheon. That was the most rewarding experience."
Jo is so involved in on-campus activities, such as serving as a school ambassador, admissions office intern, and undergraduate research fellow, that employees often call him a "staff member." He is also actively involved in external activities, including serving as a youth member of the Incheon City Happiness Policy Advisory Panels for the Citizens and appearing on television programs.
"A writer from Arirang TV who had seen my blog contacted me, and I was able to appear on a TV program," said Jo. "I'm always nervous, but I'm happy to be able to appear frequently on a channel that our school students love."
Jo, who enjoys interacting with others, expressed his desire to take on more challenges in the future.
"I have so many dreams I want to achieve. That's why I'm so active both inside and outside of school. I want to continue to meet people with diverse cultures and perspectives."
