As I’ve mentioned in some of my previous blog posts, I use GitHub to serve my websites, such as this blog, my Linktree, and URL Shortener, as part of a personal and technical endeavor.
What is the GitHub Global Campus?
One of the benefits of being a student is that you can apply for the GitHub Global Campus, including benefits like free GitHub Pro and the GitHub Student Developer Pack that provides various partner tools and offers. Some of them include free 1-year domain registrations (.me or .live), so if you’ve wanted a domain but didn’t want to pay for it, here is your chance to kickstart a website of your own! If you’re a developer or a programmer, it also provides a plethora of helpful tools and platforms for free.
Troubleshooting
Benefits aside, I had a few difficulties initially applying for the Global Campus. When applying, I had noticed that GitHub denied my request because my school “does not appear to have a campus location in my country” - I went ahead and submitted a discussion under GitHub Community, which they were able to verify Mason Korea (and hopefully, other IGC universities) as a campus.
I tried re-applying and then was stuck on GitHub not being able to use my location information, despite having enabled cookies and trying different browsers. After a few weeks or so, I tried using a different network, to which it finally worked! Perhaps I may be the first person to apply for the GitHub Global Campus here in Mason Korea, so to help some of you out who may be interested as well, here is a quick outline.
- Sign up for GitHub Education and the Student Developer Pack using your school email address (create a GitHub account if you don’t have one yet). I also suggest completing your GitHub profile, including any relevant information (name and company for instance).
- As for enrollment verification, I was unable to use my unofficial transcript after multiple attempts - my solution was to order enrollment verification via National Student Clearinghouse (available on Patriot Web for Mason students). Because the form only allows image files, I converted the downloaded pdf into an image file and uploaded the enrollment verification on the application.
- Hopefully, after you’ve gone through these steps, you should be verified!
