Today, Mason Korea Student Government alongside the IGC Student Union attended a roundtable discussion with the CEO, Director General, and other staff from the Incheon Global Campus Foundation.
First and foremost, we have a new link to our Student Government website which can be found under http://mk.sg.gmu.edu for easier access. You may find relevant information such as news (including newsletters) and contact information for members here.
At Mason Korea Student Government, we understand that many of our students have various questions, concerns, and suggestions that they would like to voice to the Incheon Global Campus Foundation. As representatives of the student body, we take our responsibilities very seriously, which is why we aim to transparently disclose these matters pertinent to our community.
- Recent FCU issue in Housing: We realize that many students had to relocate to off-campus locations with the FCU issue at the start of the Spring 2023 semester. The Foundation recognized the severity of such an issue and plans to take appropriate actions, such as an overhaul of these systems, in upcoming semesters in coordination with governmental agencies.
- Internet connectivity issues in Housing: As with the increasing number of students on the IGC, the Foundation has been working on alternative methods to provide a stable and fast internet connection to all students through commercial internet service providers.
- IGC Fitness Center: The Foundation noted that much of the equipment in the Fitness Centers have been out of service or require maintenance and will be taking appropriate measures with subcontractors. They will also be looking into the installation of water dispensers in the center.
- IGC Housing Applications: We understand that students currently have difficulties with the application process for IGC Housing. In addition to the Incheon Global Campus’ expansion with additional double rooms planned to finish construction by 2025, the Foundation promised to investigate some of these issues and look for possible solutions. We will continue to work with the Office of University Life to plan and coordinate a system to cater to our student body’s needs.
- Smoking booths on-campus: Many students have asked for an additional smoking booth on-campus near the IGC Library – while the Incheon Global Campus will stay as a strictly smoking-free campus, the Foundation plans to add a new smoking booth between the IGC Library and SUNY Korea buildings to address these needs.
- Opening of roof and side gates: The Foundation addressed students’ suggestions such as the opening of additional spaces on-campus, such as the roof and 24/7 operation of side gates for IGC Housing. We promise to coordinate with the Foundation on these matters to find a balance between the safety and satisfaction of the student body.
- Financial transparency and national scholarships: The IGC Foundation will continue working on transparent budgeting for each university with various staff members and will investigate disclosing such information to students. As with Korean Government Scholarship and Student Loan programs, these matters require amendments in Korean law, which the Foundation will continue to push for with appropriate legislative branches.
Finally, the IGC Student Union has begun planning for this year’s IGC Sports Day with the Foundation. We look forward to many students from the Incheon Global Campus joining us on one of its biggest annual events and will be reaching out to relevant student organizations once details have been finalized.
We thank our community for continuing to support Mason Korea Student Government and our goals to advocate for the student body’s interests.
